Meru MCAs present 17 videos as evidence at Kawira Mwangaza’s impeachment hearing
On Tuesday, December 27, Meru County Assembly presented a total of 17 pre-produced video clips as evidence to demonstrate the impeachment of Governor Kawira Mwangaza to the Senate Special Committee headed by Kakamega senator Boni Khalwale.
These clips were played before the select committee when Abogeta West MCA and Minority Whip Dennis Kiogora who sponsored the impeachment motion took to the floor to defend the decision of the Assembly.
Here is a rundown of some of the videos presented revolving around abuse of office claims.
In one of the videos, the MCA purports to show Kawira Mwangaza making what they termed as roadside appointments of county workers at Timau on or around September 22, 2022.
The governor allegedly appointed firefighters at a public rally at Timau before conducting a transparent and competitive recruitment process.
However, Kiogora confirmed that he does not know any of these appointees and they are not included in the county salary. In the same video, Kawira is accused of making roadside appointments with market guards at Nkubu.
In another video, the embattled governor announced her husband to the position of the Patron of the Meru Youth Service and named him as the Meru Hustlers Ambassador.
According to Kiogora, the position of Patron of the Meru Youth Service was nonexistent and the process did not follow the right procedure,
According to him, the office of the Meru Youth Service could only be established by the County Public Service Board.
“She also failed to submit her husband’s name for approval by the Assembly before making the impugned appointments,” Kiogora noted.
The select committee further watched another video of the governor humiliating the Minority Leader and Akithii Ward MCA Mwenda Ithili, at a public rally held at Mweronkanga.
The governor allegedly asked the Minority Leader to make a public apology for unknown and undisclosed wrongs at the public rally.
“She violently grabbed a microphone from the Minority Leader at the public rally,” Kiogora claimed.
Other accusations include an alleged forceful entry into the assembly and unlawful mobilisation of riots against MCAs, misconduct relating to the nomination of CECs and violation of public finance management laws.
Kawira Mwangaza on Tuesday pleaded not guilty to all accusations levelled against her by the Meru County Assembly before the select committee.
The 11-member panel has been given up to December 30 to deliver its final report on the matter.
