NCIC accused of doing little to arrest h**e sp*ech
National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) was yesterday accused of doing little in the fight against hate speech.
With politicians turning against each other on a daily basis, Naivasha leaders have challenged the commission to up its game and tame the inciting leaders.
Addressing the press in Naivasha, Ndegwa Nguthiru representing area traders said that there was an urgent need to tame the statements by politicians.
He noted that similar sentiments in 2007 led to the post-election violence with Naivasha among of the hardest hit towns.
“We are challenging the NCIC to wake up from its slumber and act on these politicians who are engaged in hate speech so that we can save the nation,” he said.
Flanked by traders, church and youths leaders, Nguthiru at the same expressed their concern over the ongoing campaign against the poor and the rich.
Seeking sympathy
He accused some leaders of engaging in the talk of seeking sympathy warning that this could lead to profiling of some people ahead of the coming general elections.
“We have already seen some senior politicians using the rich and poverty issue in the country in their campaigns and this is very wrong,” he said.
Nguthiru said that they fully supported the planned Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) as it would address the leadership crisis caused by previous regimes.
“For years the top leadership in this country has been shared between a few communities but through BBI this will be resolved,” he said.
He revisited the recent hate statement targeting the First Family noting that this was wrong and should be condemned by all people.
One of the women leaders Salome Wambui noted that women and children were the most affected whenever there was chaos.
She called on politicians to keep parents away from their disputes noting that ongoing hate speeches had the potential of causing chaos in the country.
“We are headed into the election period when all manner of hate speeches are released and it’s time that the necessary arms of government act,” she said.
