Nema warns on sale of plastic bags
National Environmental Management Authority (Nema) yesterday warned Busia residents against sale and use of plastic bags.
County Nema director Kipkoech Rop blamed increased use of the banned products on the porous Kenya-Uganda border.
“Seemingly, Busia residents have forgotten the ban on sugar bags is still in force, it is illegal to use the bags so let those still using them stop,” Rop added.
The official said they are working with relevant authorities to ensure culprits are apprehended.
“The law is very clear for anyone found using the banned plastic bags, if you are found with plastic bags, you will be find up to Sh1million or four years in jail,” said Rop.
Climate change
Area County Government Director of Environment and Natural Resources Dennis Chirande noted environmental degradation is on the increase, saying there is need to involve all stakeholders to address the problem.
“It is time the county adopts a strategy that is essential in terms of addressing environmental degradation, awareness, funding levels and other emerging issues such as climate change,” he said.
The ban on all plastic carrier bags and flat bags used for commercial and household packaging in Kenya took effect on August 28, 2017. – KNA
