NMS reacts after a mother delivers outside Pumwani Hospital
The Nairobi Metropolitan Service (NMS) has confirmed and regretted a child delivery outside Pumwani Hospital on September 13.
NMS said a hospital guard denied the patient entry into the hospital. However, the woman was later admitted into the labour wards and has since been discharged with her baby.
NMS Director of Health Services Josephine Mbae said health workers at Pumwani were on a strike, but had notified NMS.
NMS, however, said 'essential services' were still being offered even as the strike went on.
"The Security Guard denied the patient acess to the premises in a very unfortunate incident, before a Nurse from the Maternity Ward was notified of the occurrence and rushed to the scene to assist in the Delivery and admission to the Maternity Ward," said Mbae.
Mbae said the National Police Service shall be offering security at Pumwani and other facilities that were managed by the now defunct Nairobi County Government.
Details of the woman delivering outside Pumwani in a viral video have evoked anger against the hospital management and NMS.
Murang'a Women Rep Sabina Chege said NMS boss Mohammed Badi should take full responsibility over the incident.
"I would like to get a detailed account of the incident, who brought in the mother and why she was not taken in," she said.
The lawmaker who is also the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Health Committee said she will summon Badi to shed light on the incident.
