Party of National Unity (PNU) candidate in the Kiambaa by-election  withdrew from the race yesterday and threw her weight behind Jubilee’s Party’s Kariri Njama.

Dr Lucy Wanjiru yesterday said  she seeks to ensure Jubilee recaptures the seat in the mini poll slated for July 15.

“From today, no one should be perplexed when they see me and Njama working together because our main agenda is to ensure the ruling party retains the seat,” she told a crowd at Gacii shopping center.

Flanked by Njama and Kiambu town MP Jude Njomo, she prevailed upon her supporters to turn out in large numbers and voter for the Jubilee candidate.

“My name will be on the ballot, because the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has already printed names of all the candidates it cleared but I beseech my supporters to vote for Njama,” she said.

Her withdrawal took her supporters and other contestants by surprise owing to the fact that she had invested heavily in her campaigns besides being perceived as a possible game changer in the race.

“We did not expect her to give up. In actual facts, she was about to turn tables for the two front-runners; Njama and United Democratic Alliance’s Njuguna Wanjiru.

She has disappointed her supporters,” said one of her campaign team managers who sought anonymity. Njama exuded optimism of winning the race, saying:

“We are getting stronger and stronger every other day. We shall beat our opponents hands down. However, we should not be complacent and relax.”

 Veiled attack

He said the government will rehabilitate the Gacii/Karura and the Gacii/Gacharage roads, noting that the contractor was already on site.

In a veiled attack on National Assembly Majority Leader Amos Kimunya, who had stated that the road would not be rehabilitated if locals fail to elect the party candidate, Njama said President Uhuru Kenyatta was committed to improving infrastructure across the country.

“We thank our party leader, President Uhuru for ensuring that this roads are rehabilitated as was the wish of the late Paul Koinange,” he said. Earlier, more than 1,500 boda boda operators endorsed Njama ahead of the election.

Njomo urged voters to desist from being hoodwinked to join the opposition, saying  they stand to gain a lot while in government.

“Ask yourselves why these people are telling you to vote for the opposition candidate and yet they are in government,” he said.

His remarks came even as UDA candidate Njuguna Wanjiku continued with his door-to -door campaigns, urging voters to elect him for the sake of development.

Addressing supporters at Laini recently, he said UDA was the only party, which can address the plights of the less privileged in the society.

“UDA is a formidable party which is destined to form the next government,” he said.
