Quest for one umbrella party in Central Kenya gains momentum
The quest by political parties from Mt Kenya region to come under one umbrella, continued to gain momentum after three more political parties started a new alliance.
Party of National Unity (PNU), the Democratic Party (DP) and Safina yesterday met and formed a nine-member committee charged to review the national governance structure.
The three, however, distanced themselves from tribal alliances ahead of the 2022 political contest.
The group led by Laikipia Governor Ndiritu Muriithi and former nominated MP George Nyamweya charged that their conversation goes beyond handouts.
Empty slogans
In a statement read on their behalf by PNU chairman David Kamau, the leaders said they will only support any political formation that supports socio-economic activities across the country.
“We have formed a nine-member committee to look into the governance system of the country and the socio-economic systems that need to be put in place. We are beyond empty slogans but for real change.”
The three parties further noted that PNU is known for its sound policies that powered the country’s Gross Development Product from a paltry four per cent in 2003 to nearly 7.8 as at December 2012.
Muriithi, an ally of President Uhuru Kenyatta said there was need to re-look into the governance system and the socio-economic programmes that will benefit majority of Kenyans.
“We are not in the business of creating slogans that do not bring meaningful change to the people.
What Kenya needs is a leadership that will create jobs and unite the country,” said Muriithi.
Nyamweya exuded confidence that the appellate court will overturn the High Court verdict on the Building Bridges Initiative.
“We are social democrats who believe that the population should be empowered to make economy grow.
It is our hope that the appellate court will overturn the decision so that BBI can be passed. We believe the 35 per cent allocation to counties will spur economic development across the country,” said Nyamweya.
Another outfit bringing together Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua, Chama Cha Kazi supremo and Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria and The Service Party leader Mwangi Kinjuri has been meeting in what insiders say is to unite the Mt Kenya region vote as a block.
