PNU to hold special meeting to discuss Azimio coalition

Party of National Unity (PNU) has called a special National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting tomorrow to discuss affiliation with the Azimio-Jubilee Coalition.
A notice dated February 8 and signed by the PNU secretary-general John Anunda and chairman David Kamau, says the meeting will be held on Thursday at the party headquarters on Musa Gitau road off Waiyaki way.
“You are hereby invited to a special NEC meeting on Thursday 10 February 2022…The agenda of the meeting is to plan for a special National Delegates Conference (NDC) to deliberate and resolve that PNU joins the Jubilee/Azimio Coalition,” the notice says in part.
The meeting comes at time aspirants seeking PNU party ticket in Mt Kenya region had expressed jitters about being lumped together in joint nominations with Jubille Party aspirants inside Azimio Coalition due to past experiences with bungled primaries in 2013 and 2017.
“We are calling for clarity. Aspirants seeking PNU ticket are concerned they may have a much of a chance an Azimio coalition that has Jubilee Party and a sitting President in it. David Murathe is still influential in Jubilee and 2017 memories are still fresh” said one aspirant
The meeting comes a day after Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture, Peter Munya gave the clearest indication he had put on hold his Meru governor election ambitions, and, instead, opted to remain in the Cabinet.
Munya and his supporters have been involved in shadow boxing and supremacy battles with Laikipia governor and Raila Odinga presidential campaign elections board chairman Ndiritu Muriithi and his supporters in the Mt Kenya region over PNU’s party leaders mantle. Munya’s option to continue serving in the cabinet gives Muriithi the latitude to expand and extend his political wings as PNU party leader barring other contenders for the same stepping forth.
Muriithi is expected to launch his Laikipia governor re-election campaign on a PNU ticket on Sunday in Nyahururu.
