Four people died on Wednesday evening after a police vehicle chasing a chang’aa dealer veered off the road at Chwele market in Bungoma County.

Three people died on the spot while one died while undergoing treatment at Chwele sub county hospital.

The deceased who were on their way home after purchasing tomatoes at the market met their death when the speeding police vehicle veered off the Chwele- Kimilili road.

The police officers were chasing a vehicle driven by a notorious chang’aa dealer who had defied their orders to stop.

Business came to a standstill after the rowdy crowd engaged the police in running battles after they barricaded the busy road condemning the incident.

It forced police officers from Bungoma police station and local politicians to cool the situation and allow the officers to collect the bodies.

Mukuyuni MCA Meshack Museveni demanded the immediate transfer of the officers who he said had overstayed at the station.

He claimed that the officers were doing nothing to restore insecurity in the area but their main work was to make rounds raiding chang’aa dens for bribes.

‘’We want those officers who have overstayed at the station to be transferred with immediate effect as their only work is to go after chang’aa dealers,’’ said Museveni.

He vowed that as local leaders they were not going to sit and watch as innocent people are killed.

‘’Police vehicle is supposed to do patrols and ensure that Chwele people have 24 hour security but not to deal with chang’aa brewers only,’’ he noted.
