It’s bad for Ruto to assign security officers to guard chicken- Governor Alfred Mutua
Speaking at a morning show on Thursday September 2, 2021 at a local TV station, Governor Alfred Mutua claimed that the damning revelations about Deputy President William Ruto's vast security detail has painted him in bad light.
Mutua opined that it was inconsiderate for the second-in-command to station security officers to guard his chicken when Kenyans in villages and towns are grappling with a low police to civilian ratio.
“I think this has really exposed the DP. It makes him look very bad especially to people who live in the villages, people who live in our towns who are suffering from criminal elements, that one individual can have police officers guarding chicken," he said.
Mutua rubbished claims that the security fiasco had garnered the 2022 presidential hopeful sympathy. The second-term-governor says he finds it rather absurd that Ruto's Koitalel Poultry Farm is guarded by Administration Police when the nation is struggling to better the police to civilian ratio.
The Machakos governor argues that, while Ruto is entitled to adequate security, the Interior Ministry should cap the number of security personnel assigned to a person regardless of their stature.
“This is the DP, this is the person who is second-in-command; if anything happened to the President, God forbid, he would be the one to take over. So that person has to be protected as if that person is a president in waiting. But, does this protection extend to chicken, or carrots, or the cows?," he said.
Appearing before the Parliamentary Committee on Administration and National Security, Interior CS Fred Matiang'i revealed that DP Ruto has a 257-police security detail stationed at his various homes and property.
Matiang'i's submission came in the backdrop of an uproar from Ruto allied MPs, after his ministry replaced GSU officers who were guarding his homes with Administration Police.
