Jubilee MP asks IEBC to suspend voter registration in North Eastern until it rains
Wajir West MP Ahmed Kolosh has asked the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to suspend the ongoing mass voter registration in North Eastern Kenya until it rains in the region.
Kolosh claims that the region is currently hardly hit by acute drought and it would be an arduous task for locals fighting hunger to travel distances for voter registration.
The legislator has urged the electoral body to suspend the process in the region until the rains are back lest a huge chunk of potential voters miss out on registration.
"The season we are in is the season of voter registration. We know we are in a serious drought and we will ask our people despite the situation, please register to vote the coming year.
"But we want to urge the IEBC to suspend the exercise of voter registration forthwith so that this exercise, especially for Northern Kenya, can resume when the rains come. It will be very difficult for someone fighting for his or her livelihoods to travel hundreds and thousands of kilometres to register as voters," he said.
The electoral body commenced the mass voter registration on October 4, 2021 and is set to run the exercise for 30 days until November 2, 2021.
The exercise is geared at ensuring new ID card holders get their names in the voter register in preparation of the August 2022 general elections.
