Mount Kenya leaders set to sign major pre-elections deal with over nine parties
A section of Mount Kenya leaders is expected to hold an exclusive meeting over the weekend in Embu town, People Daily Digital can authoritatively reveal.
The region has been restless over its future as President Uhuru Kenyatta's term comes to an end in August next year.
Political pundits claim that the race for State House in next year's polls has spawned two political formations in the Mount Kenya region; one focused on the traditional Gikuyu, Embu, and Meru Association (Gema) unity, while the other has been agitating for Embu, Meru, and Tharaka Nithi to break away and form Mt Kenya East bloc.
TSP party leader Mwangi Kiunjuri, Narc-Kenya leader Martha Karua, among leaders of 7 parties that struck a pre-election deal a month ago will hold a meeting with leaders from Mount Kenya East to discuss the wider 2022 election deal.
According to invites that were sent to the party officials on Tuesday and seen by People Daily Digital, members of the parties have been advised to have at least 7 members of their parties attending the event.
The invite indicated that each party will take care of its party members and that they will be expected to pay Ksh6,800 per person for the event.
The event will take place in Embu, Izaak Walton hotel.
“Good evening. On 13th September, we will have the Mt. Kenya Forum meeting with political leaders from the region. You together with 9 members from your political party are invited to attend, “the statement read.
Among the parties in the lineup for the pact are Rebuild and Restore Party of Embu Senator Lenny Kivuti, Democratic Party (DP) of Esau Kioni, National Ordinary People Empowerment Union, (NOPEU) of Mpuru Apuri, and The New Democrats of Thuo Mathenge.
Others included the People’s Party of Kenya(PPK), Party of Democratic Unity(PDU) as well as Chama cha Kazi (CCK) of Moses Kuria.
A reliable source who has sought anonymity has told People Daily Digital that a section of Jubilee leaders from the Mount Kenya region will also attend.
On Monday, Karua and Kiunjuri held a meeting at Serena Hotel with MP Kanini Kega and Murang’a Woman Representative Sabina Chege.
The leaders vowed to work together in uniting people from the Mount Kenya region irrespective of the parties they hold.
Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria who is a close ally of Deputy President William Ruto didn’t attend the Serena meeting.
According to various sources, Kuria isn’t comfortable working with Jubilee leaders in a pre-election deal.
On Monday, he slammed the Jubilee party online claiming that it can’t rise again even if offered various interventions.
“Rest in Peace Jubilee Party. You shall never arise even on resurrection day. Good to see your orphans looking for adopters and shelter,” Kuria posted.
