A specialised police unit that was part of the team that provided security during the funeral service of former President Daniel arap Moi moved to Kabarak last evening to reinforce their colleagues.

Security was beefed up in Nairobi and Nakuru counties with some officers brought in from the neighbouring counties. Yesterday, the funeral service of the former President went on smoothly without any major incident.

At the stadium, security was intensified owing to the large number of people and dignitaries that had assembled at the stadium.

Most roads were closed as police officers manned the main roads including Uhuru Highway, Valley Road, Aerodrome and Bunyala roads.

“Our challenge was the big number of people that had assembled at the stadium. There was, however, no ugly incident reported,” said a senior government official.

Prior to the function, detectives had conducted covert operations to ensure the city was safe.

Last year, detectives killed seven terrorists and arrested seven others barely three weeks to Mashujaa Day celebrations. Intelligence reports indicated the militants had planned to strike at the Mama Ngina Drive where the celebrations were supposed to be held.

Special forces

At the Nyayo Stadium function, the main dais that hosted the President and other heads of state was secured by a joint team of officers from the General Service Unit’s Recce Company and the Military Special Forces.

Rift Valley Region police commander Marcus Ochola also told People Daily that specialised units from Nairobi and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters had moved to Kabarak and adjacent Nakuru to ensure the area was well-secured.

“We are expecting over 30,000 people, but the figure could be higher. We are, however, prepared and some officers from the specialised units have also joined us here,” Ochola said.
