The Senate has approved the nomination of Japheth Koome  (pictured) as the next Inspector General of Police.

The National Assembly is expected to table the report for debate today in the afternoon.

This is after the Senate adopted the report of the Joint Committee of the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Administration and Internal Affairs and the Senate Standing Committee on National Security, Defence and Foreign Affairs.“The Committees having considered the suitability, competence, experience and integrity of the nominee following the approval hearing process, recommend that Parliament approves the nomination of Japhet Koome Nchebere for appointment to the position of the Inspector-General of the National Police Service,” reads part of the report.

During the approval hearings, the committee in its report states, nominee exhibited knowledge in matters relating to security, law, management, leadership skills and qualities necessary to administer, manage and command the National Police Service as prescribed under section 11 of the National Police Service Act.

“Based on the evidence submitted during the approval hearings, the nominee met all the Constitutional requirements of Chapter 6 of the Constitution on leadership and integrity and statutory requirements necessary for appointment as Inspector General of the National Police Service as is provided for under Section 7(b) of the Public Appointments (Parliamentary Approval) Act,” reads part of the report.

While supporting the motion, Okong’o Omogeni (Nyamira) said the new IG should address the issue of insecurity so that the country can attract more tourists and other investors.

“When tourists are visiting a country, the first thing they do is to google the security situation of that country. Once we are sure that we have security, we will attract more visitors,” he said.

Omogeni also called on Koome to help reduce the number of roadblocks, adding that the many roadblocks have become a conduit for traffic police officers to solicit for bribes.

Jackson Mandago (Uasin Gishu) while also supporting the motion for the approval of Koome, challenged him to move with speed and help reduce insecurity, especially in Nairobi’s CBD, which he said was no longer safe.
