Rape, murder of 80-year-old granny leaves village in shock

Residents of Gichegecha village in Kiharu, Murang'a County are reeling in shock after a 80-year-old granny was raped and murdered in cold blood.

The body of Consolata Njoki was found on Monday evening after a day long search for her.

According to Stephen Mwangi, a son to the deceased, they had supper with their mother on Sunday evening and she went to her house to sleep.

On Monday morning, however, she did not show up as usual and this got them worried and when they went to check on her they found the house locked from outside.

"We alerted the neighbors to help us look for her but she was nowhere to be found," he said.

However, late in the evening Mwangi bumped into the lifeless body of her mother which had been dumped about 100 metres from their homestead.

"We don't know who did this to her. It's very painful for us as the family and we call for speedy investigation to have the culprits arrested and charged," he said.

Confirming the incident, Murang'a county police Commander Josphat Kinyua said the deceased appeared to have been raped before being killed.

The police boss said the head had some injuries indicating she could have been hit with a blunt object on the head.

Kinyua said the body was moved to the morgue where a postmortem shall be conducted adding that the investigation into he matter have been launched.
