State assures on security, coronavirus measures as exams start
The Government yesterday assured that it’s now all systems go for administration of national examinations, with Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exam rehearsals set for Friday.
Government Spokesperson, Colonel (Rtd) Cyrus Oguna said all arrangements had been made and measures put in place for effective and successful administration of the exams, assuring that no one will miss out because of school fees balances or other circumstances such as insecurity.
He also said integrity of the exam process has been upheld and that exams will be taken under strict adherence to Covid-19 protocols, including sufficient spacing, frequent use of sanitizers and handwashing, for the wellbeing of learners and teachers.
“Examination centres have been established across the country, including areas like Kapedo and Merti that have been experiencing security challenges.
Even students whose schools were affected by the rising lake waters in areas like Baringo County will sit for exams in centres where they had been transferred to,” Oguna said yesterday, in a press conference in Nairobi.
All other classes, from Pre-Primary 1 to Class 7 and Form 1 to 3 are expected to have closed by tomorrow to pave way for a conducive examination environment.
Well-prepared
Oguna said management of examination is a multi-agency activity that brings together different agencies and stakeholders, with the sole purpose of ensuring success and efficiency during exam period.
He said that among the infrastructure set up include the establishment of command and control centre to facilitate ease of communication and response during the examination period.
Oguna also assured that necessary logistics have also been put in place to ensure that exams activity goes on uninterrupted, adding that the examinations shall be conducted under strict adherence to Covid-19 protocols.
Oguna also acknowledged teachers who have worked, sometimes under very difficult circumstances to prepare candidates for the exams.
The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) registered 1,191,725 candidates in 28,467 KCPE examination centres while 752,981 KCSE candidates have been registered in 10,437 examination centres.
