Deputy President William Ruto has moved in to quell divisions that have emerged in his United Democratic Alliance (UDA) within the coastal region and  promised a fair nomination process.

Ruto met more than 5,000 aspirants who claimed that some of his key supporters from the area were discriminative.

A splinter UDA group has accused former Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar of attempting to turn the outfit into “a one-man show.”

They accused Omar, who has declared interest in the Mombasa governorship on a UDA ticket, of sidelining them during a closed door meeting.

The party has been carrying out grassroots registration of members and leaders in the region.

Kilifi North MP Owen Baya and his Nyali counterpart Mohamed Ali told journalists that the region has presented among other things, a coastal blueprint to the party should it form the next government.

“In politics, there must be divisions and that is possible everywhere, but we have agreed that we need to unite as members and make the party popular and educate the people about our manifesto. This is the big agenda we had to discuss,” Baya.

Among the issues the legislators claimed tabled to the DP include a blue print on agriculture, revival of coastal economy, industries, an end to extra-judicial killings.

“We have lined up our concerns about the party especially on how to popularize the party in the grassroots as well as selling the bottom-up economic model,” said Baya on the sidelines of the meeting.

Nyali MP Mohamed Ali said the aspirants for various seats agreed that whoever will lose in the primaries will have to support the winner.

“We have agreed that whoever will lose should support the winner so that we can avert more divisions. We will do a fair nomination and no one will be favoured,” Ali said.

Lunga Lunga MP Khatib Mwashetani reiterated that the coastal region will reap from the UDA manifesto because of its emphasis on job creation.

Ruto, who is on charm offensive political tour at the Coast, extended his campaigns to Rabai and Kaloleni sub-counties where he met boda boda riders.

The DP, who was accompanied  MP Aisha Jumwa, later proceeded to Malindi town to meet beach operators, mnazi vendors and other scale business people.
