UK envoy to visit Laikipia in Wanjiru murder row
The British High Commissioner Jane Marriott is today expected to visit Laikipia over the murder of Agnes Wanjiru linked to a British soldier.
A statement from Governor Ndiritu Muriithi’s office indicated that the people of Laikipia will use the opportunity to demand justice over Wanjiru’s killing.
“Anything short of that will be a travesty of justice to the deceased’s family,” said the statement signed by County Communications Director Muchiri Gitonga who indicated Marriot will be a companied a minister from the UK.
In Parliament, MPs threatened to vote against the military cooperation agreement between Kenya and the UK until the British soldier alleged to have murdered Wanjiru is charged with the offence.
They accused Defence Cabinet Secretary (CS) Eugene Wamalwa of failing to act on the matter even after the British media disclosed the identity of the officer involved. Wamalwa while appearing before the Defence and Foreign Affairs Committee said that the existing military agreement between the two counties had expired and there was need to ratify it. But the MPs told the CS they will not approve the cooperation between the two nations.
“We will not rest until justice is served for the late Wanjiru who was killed nine years ago,” said Raso Dido (Saku).
Failing to ratify the agreement would mean the end of the British training in Nanyuki as the foreign forces stay in the country on strength of the agreement.
Mandera North MP Bashir Abdullahi told the CS that Parliament will ratify the agreement on condition that the culprit is brought to Kenya to face the law.
