Ulinzi, Sharks advance as confusion mar FKF Cup
Confusion marked the Betway Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Cup round of 16 at the weekend following miscommunication and especially that relating to the coronavirus pandemic.
The match between Bandari and Sofapaka at Mbaraki Sports ground was not played neither is the one between KCB and Wazito at Afraha Stadium in Nakuru.
Among the four teams lined up for action, it was Sofapaka and Wazito who incurred unnecessary expenses mainly through transport even as blame was shifted to Football Kenya Federation (FKF) for miscommunication.
Empty stadium
In the case of the match in Mombasa, Sofapaka claimed that they received an email from the authorities indicating that the match would be played at 4pm in an empty stadium only to be told by Bandari officials that the match was at 2pm.
“We relayed the federation’s message to Bandari officials who were adamant that the match was at 2pm and that the facility was booked for other functions,’’ said Sofapaka president Elly Kalekwa.
A livid Kalekwa took FKF to task to explain who will refund them or what will come about on a mistake that is not their own making, while stating that in case of rescheduling of the match, Sofapaka will not play in Mombasa but in Nairobi.
“In any case, we deserve a walkover and in the event that a new date is set, we will not play in Mombasa,” said Kalekwa.
Wazito meanwhile, showed up in Nakuru only to realise few hours later that their opponents KCB had earlier issued a statement that they will skip the match as cautionary measure over the virus.
