The Kenya Universities Staff Union (Kusu) has supported the appointment of the new University of Nairobi (UoN) Vice Chancellor Stephen Kiama.

Speaking to the People Daily, Kusu secretary Charles Mukhwaya said the union supports the appointment of Prof Kiama, citing the move would stabilise the university.

“We want the University to stabilise, it should not be always politicking and lobbying. Parents are paying dearly and want value for money,” he said.

Mukhwaya said Kenyan universities had been affected negatively due to continuous almost permanent recruiting mode for managers.

“The issues raised on ethnicity, qualification among other intrigues have not been substantiated and until such time, the appointment was properly done,” he said.

He said the appointment was in accordance with the miscellaneous Amendment of Universities Act of 2012.

Out of the country

Universities Academic Staff Union (Uasu) chairman Muga K’Olale contacted for a comment indicated he was out of the country and would only speak once he jets back.

There are claims of disquiet among lecturers at UoN among other stakeholders with fear of looming court case over the appointment, which was done over the weekend.

Speaking yesterday during the launch of UoN Strategic Plan 2019-2024, Council chair Julia Ojiambo welcomed the new VC but warned that he could not afford a breather even  after a gruelling recruitment exercise.
