Dominant Kenyan claims women crown at the EDP half marathon in Portugal

Kenya’s Brigid Kosgei ran superbly to claim the EDP Lisbon Half Marathon women’s crown on Sunday, clocking 01:05:51.

Racing under warm and humid conditions, the former women’s marathon world recorder touched the finish tape ahead of Ethiopian duo of Bosena Mulatie and Tigist Menigstu who settled for second and third position respectively.

In front of her two kids, Kosgei who seemed to be warming up for next month’s women showdown at the London Marathon was in ecstasy and confirmed her status, sealing the win before the 10km mark to finish with a comfortable on the streets of Lisbon for the World Athletics Elite Label road race.

“This was preparations for London Marathon next month. I am happy and I appreciate what I have ran today. I am also grateful to the organizers for a good race,” Kosgei said.

Ethiopia’s Dinkalem Ayele punched above his weight to win the men’s title in a time of 01:00:36.

Kenya’s Dominic Kipaturus clocked 01:00:40 to finish second while Germany’s Amal Petros was third.

Edward Zakayo of Kenya,who is the reigning African Champion in men’s 5000m timed 01:02:20 to finish the race in position nine.

Kosgei who has a personal best of 2:14:04 in women’s marathon is expected to be part of the fireworks in the women’s race at the London marathon on April 21.

She will enter a strong field of great long distance runners that includes fellow Kenyans of Olympic champion Peres Jepchirchir, Ruth Chepngetich, Joycilline Jepkosgei and Sheila Chekirui. The Kenya contingent will be looking forward to down the reigning record holder in that distance Tigist Assefa of Ethiopia who clocked 2:11:53 last year at the Berlin Marathon.
