Saturday, September 7th, 2019 00:21 | By

Gaspo Women are in a tight race for the Women Premier League (WPL) title with holders and league leaders Vihiga Queens, currently separated by one point after 20 matches in the 15-team league.

Breathing down their necks are last season’s third place finishers on their debut, Trans Nzoia Falcons, and former champions Thika Queens who are fighting for their second title after relinquishing to Vihiga in the first unified league in 2017.

With the holders and second-placed Trans Nzoia, who are tied at 55 points with the defending champions after playing 21 matches, not in action this weekend, Gaspo will be looking to go top after their two weekend matches.

The Edward Githua-coached Gaspo are away to Kisumu All Starlets Saturday and Wadadia Sunday. Wins in the two encounters will take Gaspo to top of the league at 60 points, five ahead of Vihiga and Trans Nzoia.

Gaspo head to their Saturday encounter buoyed by the good results they posted in the first leg encounter against Kisumu. The side picked a 4-0 win at home with Harambee Starlets duo of Wincate Kaari grabbing a hat-trick while Corazone Aquino scored the forth.

On their part, Kisumu have goal poacher Mercy Airo, whose bid for a move to Gaspo failed to go through, and Betha Omita both whom were unused substitutes in the Harambee Starlets Olympic Qualifier matches against Malawi.

Additionally, Gaspo look the better side against Wadadia who are currently in ninth position at 24 points from 20 matches. As opposed to Gaspo who have lost just two matches, their hosts have lost 10 times and drew in three encounters.

On their part, Thika, fourth on the log at 49 points after 21 matches, take on Oserian at Thika Stadium. A win takes them closer to catching up with the top three teams but they will maintain fourth position. Oserian are fifth at 35 points after 20 matches. Zetech Sparks take on Eldoret Falcons Saturday before playing Kisumu Sunday.

Eldoret will host Spedag Sunday. Fast rising Zetech are eighth on 27 points from 20 matches while Eldoret are 10th at 20 points from 21 matches. Spedag are fighting relegation at 15th with just one win and two draws in 20 matches.                                     -BARRY SILAH
