Unlike during the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) 2020/2021 league, there was no glut of goals by top club marksmen in the 2021/2022 season which ended on Sunday, with Derrick Otanga of KCB beating them all albeit with the slightest of margins.

The unheralded striker, who once made the provisional team in Harambee Stars, will take pride in having been the top scorer with 16 strikes to his name.

However, the record is a far cry from what former Kariobangi Sharks striker Erick Kapaito achieved in the 2020/2021 season.

Kapaito, who left Sharks and joined Ethiopian Premier League side Arba Minch City on a two-year contract, scored 24 goals in 2020/21 season which were two shy off the 26 by Kenya’s all-time best scorer in Gor Mahia and Harambee Stars Maurice “Sonyi”Ouma.

Besides the honours, Kapaito was named the season’s Most Valuable Player (MVP).

The second best scorer in the last ten seasons is Zambia-based Jesse Were who netted 22 goals while with Tusker in 2015

In the meantime, Kenya Police offensive midfielder Cliffton Miheso came near yet so far to beat Otanga for the Golden Boot Award after scoring 15 goals.
