Kenya's basketball head coach, popularly known as Kenya Moran's Liz Mills, was on Sunday recognised by FIBA for being the first woman to lead a team at the Afro Basket Championship.

The Australian born was feted with a golden ball as the continental competition came to an end at the Kigali Arena with Tunisia defending the Afro basket title with a 78-75 win over the Ivory Coast.

Mills took over the coaching mantle at Kenyan Moran's in February and guided them to a return to the AfroBasket tourney after a 28-year absence.
In Kigali, Kenya qualified for the quarter-final stage, where they were edged out by debutants South Sudan 60-58.

During the Afro basket tournament, the Moran's recorded three losses and one victory- against Mali in their pool matches.

The Australian-born Mills has not just coached Kenya, but also championed a cause for women. It's been demanding.

Mill's hopes and aspirations seek to help other women receive with fair consideration when they try to get top jobs in men's sports.

Prior to her job with the national team, Mills served as an assistant coach with both Zambia, when they came up short of reaching Afro Basket 2017, and Cameroon in the African Qualifiers for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019.

Mills took the helm of Kenya earlier this year and led the Moran's to their first Afro Basket qualification in 28 years.

The Moran's punched their ticket to the tournament with a 74-73 victory over 11-time Afro Basket champions Angola in the African Qualifiers on February 2021.

That qualification ensured Kenya play in the African Qualifiers for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023.

Mills dedicated the achievement of becoming the first woman to coach a men's team at a continental championship to her twin sister, Victoria, who accompanied her at the Afro Basket finale.
