Two-time world 1500m champion Faith Kipyegon has set her eyes on breaking the world record this season as she seeks to win her third title in the upcoming World Championships in Budapest in August 2023.

This comes after Kipyegon showcased her prowess in the 2023 Diamond League meetings inside Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, Qatar where she clocked a world leading time on Saturday.

“I am grateful for being able to participate and win the race despite tough opponents like the Ethiopians, but we shift focus to the next assignment and goal which is to break the world record this summer,” an elated Kipyegon said after winning the Doha meeting race.

The 28-year-old held off Ethiopian Welteji Diribe, who was keen on causing an upset but slacked off in the last 200 metres to finish with a time of 3:59;34. Her compatriot Hailu Frewyni finished third with 4:00;29.

Kipyegon further said she believes she has what it takes to surpass the achievement of Ethiopian Genzebe Dibaba who set a new world record of 3:50.07 at the Monaco Diamond League in 2015.

The world record currently stands at 3:50:07, set by Genzebe Dibaba. Kipyegon came agonizingly close to breaking the record at the Monaco Diamond League last year when she ran 3:50:37.

Kipyegon however remains to be arguably the most accomplished runner in the 1500 metres race despite the World Record constantly eluding her.
