NCBA Golf Series lands at Sigona
The par-72 Sigona Golf Club will tomorrow play host to the seventh leg of the ongoing 2022 NCBA Golf Series.
Over 150 golfers have been drawn to tee off at the ever-green 18-hole golf course where they will be aiming to book their spots to play at the grand finale, where top finishers will win an all-expenses-paid trip to South Africa’s Fancourt Country Club.
The event follows the sixth leg of the series played at the Great Rift Valley Golf this past weekend where home player, Steven Njoroge, clinched the Division One top position having carded a round of 34 points.
In the Division Two category, handicap 27 Keval Maisuria sealed the win having carded a round of 34 points, while handicap 32 Miriam Smith carded a round of 33 points to claim the win in the Ladies’ category.
The three became the latest addition to the list of golfers who will battle it out for the ultimate prize at the series’ Grand Finale that is set to be played at Muthaiga Golf Club.
Speaking ahead of the Sigona tournament, NCBA Group Managing Director John Gachora said: “We had an amazing experience the last time we were at Sigona Golf Club, the course was in good shape, and the hospitality of the club was also great. We are therefore delighted to be headed back to the golf course and it is our hope that we shall have another great outing.”
He added: “We are grateful that the series so far attracted many golfers across the different clubs we have visited. It continues to be a great platform for amateur golfers to compete and improve their skills, which is exactly what we set out to achieve when we started this series. It is also a great platform for us to interact with our stakeholders from different regions. As we head to Sigona, therefore, we are hopeful that we shall have great interactions with the participants.”
Meanwhile, the Safaricom Golf Tour heads to Kitale, Trans Nzoia County this weekend for its 10th leg at the par 73 Kitale Golf Course. The Kitale leg will also a feature a caddies tournament on Monday.
“We are pleased that our series continues to attract great participation from across the country, especially with the junior golfers taking part in both the competition and golf clinics. This leg will also have the caddies tournament which speaks to what we set out achieve at the onset of this series which to give all those interested a chance to participate in the tournament,” Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa said.
The weekend’s event has attracted a field of over 170 golfers from Nandi Bears, Kakamega, Kisumu, Eldoret and Kericho Golf Clubs with the senior tournament scheduled for Saturday and juniors on Sunday.
Some of the key lady Golfers from Nandi Bears drawn in the Saturday tournament are Lydia Jebichii, the overall winner of the fourth leg in Nyanza and Faith Chemutai a previous winner in the Women’s Longest Drive Category.
Junior tourney
Sunday’s junior tourney will also involve golf clinics, where the aspiring junior golfers will get an opportunity to learn skills from various trainers as has been the case in the past nine legs.
Last week, Kericho Golf course played the host to the ninth leg of the Safaricom Golf Tour, in which Kipkirui Langat emerged the overall winner in the seniors’ tournament on 40 Stableford points with juniors Tsevi Soni and Aana Mengi claiming the best Boy and Girl titles in the juniors’ tournament.
The Safaricom Golf Tour has so far been to nine locations across the country namely: Nanyuki, Limuru, Muthaiga, Nyanza, Machakos, Eldoret, Karen, Nyali and Kericho drawing over 4,800 golfers who have taken part in the tournaments, junior clinics and outreach programmes.
As part of growing the sport among junior players in the country, Safaricom has partnered with the Junior Golf Foundation to tap and nurture young talent. The juniors can register with the Junior Golf Foundation (JGF) for Sh 1,000, which grants them access to any golf club in the country to play.
