New contracts loading
Kenya Rugby Sevens players will by the end of this month have formal contracts, making them one of the first World Rugby affiliates to secure pat comitments after the coronavirus pandemic hit the sport early last year, forcing contracts termination across the globe.
The announcement was made by Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) during the team’s midweek training at the Rugby Football Union of East Africa (RFUEA) grounds.
During Wednesday’s training, Kabras Sugar duo of forward Dan Sikuta and playmaker Brian Tanga were the latest arrival to the side to boost their current preparations ahead of a series of international build-up matches.
The arrival of the duo now complete Shujaa’s provisional training squad that will provide head coach Innocent ‘Namcos’ Simiyu with a 13-man side that will represent the country at the Spanish Invitational Rugby Sevens slated for mid February in Madrid.
Simiyu was excited with the arrival pf the two for their first session after Covid-19 testing and fitness assessment where he also confirmed that all the national team players contracts will be finalized by end of the month.
“We welcome back the Kabras duo after testing and evaluation. On the players contracts we are currently finalizing on matter and trust by the end of this month all will be set,” Simiyu told People Sport.
The team is set to play an in-house friendly match next week as they seek match fitness before their international events.
“Training is progressing well. And we want to use the Madrid tournament to gauge where we are in our Olympics preparation,” Simiyu said.
Shujaa team manager Eric Ogweno is upbeat the arrival of Sikuta and Tanga will offer the coach more options and depth as well as increase the competition among the players.
“The duo is a good addition to the program considering their vast experience.
Their inclusion is in line with our objective to give everyone a fair chance to make it to the Olympics team,” Ogweno told People Sports.
