Teenage sensation exited to fulfil childhood dream of joining Gor
Benson Omala may have completed a dream move to the country’s most successful club, Gor Mahia on Tuesday, but he still has an obstacle in making an instant impact to the club and in his quest to win the golden boot on his first season with the 18 times champions.
Omala a final year student at Kisumu Day was to sit for his Form Four examinations this years, but due to the coronavirus pandemic that affected education globally, he may be forced to write the exams next year if schools do not re-open.
That would see him experience logistical nightmare, given the fact that K’Ogalo mainly carry out their daily training sessions in Nairobi at the Camp Toyoyo grounds yet he cannot leave his Kisumu base because he has to attend classes at Kisumu Day.
“ Gor chairman Ambrose Rachier is fully aware of my situation and all I can say for now is that, I will have to give my final year in school a priority. 
I hope that we will be able to seat for our national examinations this year so that I start next year on a clean slate with the sole target of scoring goals for K’Ogalo,” Omala told People Sport.
He added: “It’s a dream come true to have finally joined this team. I have been a Gor Mahia fan since my days at Lake Primary School where I used to even sneak from class to go and watch them whenever they had league matches in Kisumu.”
Omala somehow managed to balance school with football last season when he represented Western Stima and he managed nine goals from 11 matches.
This was, however, possible because Stima trains in Kisumu and plays all their home matches in the Lake City, but for Gor Mahia, the demands are different.
The 18-year old goal-getter steered his school to the national schools finals where he managed two goals in three matches, but his side finished third in the group that saw Dagoretti High School and Ebwali progress to the next level of the competition.
“Last season I scored against Gor Mahia and now I’m here to score for them goals and help them win more trophies.
I won’t be under any pressure,” said Omala who has followed in the footsteps of his father Peter Oluoch who played as a midfielder in lower leagues in Migori.
He became the 10th player to be signed by K’Ogalo and hopes to break into the first team and make his place permanent.
