Protesters supporting the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in Malawi recently took to the streets of the commercial city, Blantyre, protesting the presidential election nullification.

The party, through a petition presented to Blantyre City Council, is calling for an investigation of the five-member panel of judges of the high court that presided over the case at the constitutional court alleging they were bribed to favor petitioners, UTM party President Saulos Chilima and Malawi Congress Party (MCP) leader Lazarus Chakwera.

The governing party leader and state president Peter Arthur Mutharika was first respondent while the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) was second.

In the case, UTM party President Chilima and Malawi Congress Party (MCP) leader Chakwera asked the court to nullify the presidential election results in the elections on May 21, 2019 over alleged irregularities.

Three days after the constitutional court ruling on February 3, President Peter Arthur Mutharika labeled the ruling a threat to Malawi democracy and an attempt to usurp the will of the people. (Xinhua)
