The ruling Jubilee party has accused United Democratic Alliance (UDA) deputy presidential candidate Rigathi Gachagua of trying to provoke Azimio la Umoja candidate Martha Karua during the deputy presidential debate held on Tuesday, July 19, 2022.

In a statement hours after the debate, Jubilee congratulated Karua for remaining calm and articulate during the debate.

"Well done Mama Martha Karua in a debate where the opponent's agenda was to provoke you & attack individuals, you remained calm, composed and articulate. The opponent made it clear that they only want power to settle scores against the President and to free up proceeds of corruption so that he can finish his mansion and host keshas," the statement read in part.

Jubilee's dalliance with Karua

According to Jubilee, which is led by President Uhuru Kenyatta, Karua won on articulating the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Alliance manifesto while Gachagua won on holding grudges.

"You, on the other hand, made it clear that the Azimio/OKA coalition is about social justice, social protection of the vulnerable, economic recovery and the well-being of Kenyans. On who holds the biggest grudges, he won hands down. On who cares about Kenyans, who has a grasp of issues affecting mwananchi, you won. You won Kenyans' hearts, you won, Mama Martha Karua," the statement added.

During the debate,  Gachagua and Karua announced that they have a personal fortune of Ksh800 million and Ksh150 million respectively.
