I am valuable – Waiguru on why Musalia, Raila, Kalonzo want her in their camps
Kirinyaga governor Anne Waiguru has lifted the lid on her role in securing the interests of Mt Kenya region ahead of the August 2022 polls.
Speaking during a televised interview with a local TV station, Waiguru revealed why leading politicians who have shown interest in the presidency are warming up to her.
“I have been in politics for a short period of time and the fact that these leaders have shown an interest in working with me tells you that they have confidence in my ability to do a good job,” Waiguru said.
The governor who was responding to a question on why ANC party leader Musalia Mudavadi, ODM’s Raila Odinga and Wiper’s Kalonzo Musyoka are reportedly pursuing her hand in a political marriage said she does not take their courtship for granted.
“We have been together in the handshake and push for BBI together. These leaders have seen how Kenyans relate to me, how I relate with them and they have seen that I can add value to their teams,” Waiguru said.
The governor further credited her interaction with other leaders stating that the leaders have seen her as an Iron Lady capable of handling the challenges and obligations that come with political office.
“You must show that you are capable of handling the job because politics is not easy, it’s not like a beauty pageant. It’s not about taking photos with people,” Waiguru said.
However, Waiguru’s recent statements come after ANC cleared the air on the party’s relationship with the governor.
Speaking in a September 21, TV interview, Mudavadi said ANC is yet to have a sit down with Waiguru after deputy party leader Ayub Savula released a contradicting statement when he accompanied the governor at the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) headquarters where she was grilled in connection to a graft case.
"My deputy made those pronouncements out of excitement when he visited Waiguru at EACC offices. Nothing of the sort has been discussed by the party. We're open for talks with anyone who may want to be my deputy, " Musalia said.
The county chief has in the recent past sent mixed signals about her next political move in the 2022 general elections. Speaking in Kirinyaga county on Wednesday, September 22, Waiguru said that she will engage her constituents before committing to any political party ahead of next year's polls.
"I said I am paying attention to the ground to find out on whose side it has shifted to before reaching a decision. I only have one question to ask, In which party would you want me to vie in? And I will say that I only heeded the advice of my people once I make that decision," she said.
