Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga has refuted claims that he asked President William Ruto to sack Energy Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir over a countrywide power outage that happened on Sunday.

Kahiga, who claims to have been at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) when power was lost, says he only termed the incident as a national embarrassment.

"I wish to clarify that I never demanded for the sacking of CS Davis Chichir for the recent power failure in my Jamhuri Day speech. All I said is that I was with Waziri at the JKIA when the blackout happened. I said he frantically made calls to have power restored. What I said and still maintain is that power failure in JKIA is a national embarrassment," Kahiga stated.

Kahiga calls for Murkomen's sacking

Kahiga said he only called for the sacking of the CS in charge of airports (Kipchumba Murkomen) and all other CSs letting the President down.

"I asked HE the President to sack the CS concerned with Airports. I also said that all cabinet secretaries letting down the President must be shown the door. I reminded all and sundry that it cannot be business as usual if the President is in office at 6 am and doesn't leave till midnight while the CSs he has given jobs continue letting him down! I still maintain this same stand," Kahiga added.

The call by Kahiga for the sacking of Murkomen comes a day after Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei asked the CS to apologise for the blackout at JKIA and backup generator failure.

"A few months ago the Trasport CS went to JKIA and fired individuals and told the country that generators have been fixed but yesterday it was a disaster. How can you lose electricity and a generator at a critical national asset like JKIA. The CS must apologise to Kenyans," Cherargei.

On Sunday, when the country was engulfed in darkness after a power outage, generators at JKIA failed to start crippling flight activities at the country's busiest airport.
