Azimio-One Kenya coalition presidential running-mate Martha Karua yesterday returned to Mt Kenya region to drum up support for her State House race flag-bearer Raila Odinga.

Addressing roadside rallies in Laikipia County, Karua said Deputy President William Ruto and his running-mate Rigathi Gachagua cannot be trusted with public resources.

Without mentioning names, the former Gichugu Member of Parliament painted the Ruto-Gachagua ticket as one which cannot be trusted with the country’s leadership.

“Even in your family, you know which child you cannot send to take care of goats because you know they will not return home with all of them, and you know who is that one that you can send,” she said.

Karua, addressed rallies in Nanyuki town, Naibor, Makutano,Wiyumiririe and Nyahururu town to popularise the Azimio la Umoja ten-point agenda.

The Narc Kenya leader, who last week kicked off Azimio campaigns in the Mt Kenya region after she was declared the deputy president candidate, said the coalition will resuscitate the country’s economy, reduce the cost of living, fight corruption and improve health care.

Karua, who was accompanied by among other leaders Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya, area governor Ndiritu Muriithi and Jubilee secretary general Jeremiah Kioni, said should Azimio take over the government, they will continue to develop the country’s infrastructure and accelerate efforts to revamp the agriculture sector.

Democracy  advocates

Karua said Kenyans should be wary of candidates who make huge promises and urged voters to make their decision based on the past records of leaders.

“Now look at the two teams seeking the presidency. One of the teams is being led by Raila and it’s a team to be trusted. Our history speaks for itself. When I was the Water minister, I did a lot of projects. When Raila was minister for Infrastructure, he spearheaded many road projects. When our competitors were in government, what did they achieve?” Karua said.

Munya criticised Ruto and Gachagua, saying while they were projecting themselves as agents of change, they were the same people who fought advocates of democracy during President Daniel arap Moi’s regime.  “Raila and Martha have been fighting for change, the others have been fighting change and democracy. They ran down this country, how can they claim they will rectify things?” Munya asked.

Governor Muriithi said the Raila-Karua presidential ticket was the exact opposite of the Ruto-Gachagua pair.

“We want hardworking and competent people. From MCAs, MPs, governor and president. We want people with integrity, people who can be entrusted with public resources and who can protect it, and use it to transform the lives of Kenyans,” he said.

Kioni said:  “The future of this country is in the hands of Baba and Mama. We should not elect people who are corrupt because if we do, this country will go to the dogs.”
