A section of Meru Leaders on Sunday endorsed Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kithure Kindiki to take over the mantle as the Mt Kenya spokesperson.

The leaders who spoke at Chaaria In Imenti Central heaped praises on the CS claiming he is the best suited in unifying the region

Led by Tigania East Member of Parliament (MP) Mpuru Aburi, Meru County Assembly Speaker Ayub Bundi and several Members of the County Assembly (MCAs), the leaders said the region must scout for an able unifying figure who will carry the mantle to front the region's political and developmental interests to the negotiation table.

“We need a powerful and focused person who can speak for us just like other communities. We cannot negotiate for anything if we are not unified by a common political and developmental interest,” Meru County Speaker said.

Mpuru, who led the locals in endorsing the former Tharaka Nithi senator to the position, said the region has been in the past faced with political conflicts on who would be their principal player.

The legislator said negotiations with other top leaders from Meru, Embu and Tharaka Nithi counties are ongoing to ensure they all speak in one voice and settle on Kindiki whom he said his developmental track records have placed him as the top performer.

“In the past, we have been always divided on who will lead Mt. Kenya East region but now is like Kindiki is a God-chosen person. He is humble and a performer, nobody is objecting to these negotiations. We are soon going to make a common declaration,” Mpuru said.

Speaking on the phone, the national vice chairman of the Ameru Njuri Ncheke supreme council of Elders Alfonce Kamwara said Kindiki is the best fit for the job.

He added the Njuri Ncheke council of elders from the three counties including Isiolo county saw the potential in him and installed him as the Ameru community spoke person in 2015.

“I think we are in the right direction although to us he is still our spokesperson. We don’t have an objection to installing him again as the larger region kingpin because all that he needs is our blessing to carry on and serve the nation and the region because we are seeing his star shining brighter after President William Ruto retires from office," Kamwara noted.

In May 2021, Justin Muturi, who is now the Attorney General, was installed by Njuri Ncheke as the region kingpin - a move that sparked different political reactions and divisions in the region with former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya declaring himself as the defacto kingpin a month later.
