An initiative by police to use drones in offering surveillance in areas suspected to be brewers and drug peddlers’ dens in Murang'a County has started bearing fruits, an official has said.

Central Kenya Regional Commissioner Wilfred Nyagwanga, who spoke when he led a team of administration officers to raid River Chania illicit brews manufacturing dens, said since the initiative was launched in the county last week, positive results have been realized.

Since the adoption of the technology, the official said police have managed to clear out nine chang’aa distilling spots along Chania River and arrested 200 people involved in the illicit brew trade.

Nyagwanga warned that the government will henceforth use drones in the fight against crime, drug peddling and in the crackdown on illicit brews.

He singled out areas along River Chania in both Murang’a and Kiambu Counties, parts of Juja and Thika’s Kiandutu slums are areas of interest in this war.

“We shall flush out these criminals from their hideaways especially within the slums. With these drones, we can easily spot those vending drugs or engaging in all manner of crime and arrest them,” he said.

He revealed that the ongoing surveillance will be extended downstream along Thika River to completely clear out chang’aa in the region.

Police adopted use of drone’s technology in the region following the return of gangs that had brewed the illicit brews in the central region before security agents used explosives to destroy the dens used for illegal activities.
