2,000 schools yet to get tablets, says authority
Implementation of the controversy-riddled Digital Literacy Programme (DLP) in public primary schools still faces hurdles as hundreds of public schools are yet to receive tablets.
The ICT Authority yesterday said about 1,937 public schools are yet to get devices five years after programme was launched.
The authority’s chief executive Catherine Getau said only 21,638 public primary schools have devices adding that the remaining schools will get them in phase two to be rolled out early next year.
Addressing delegates at heads teachers conference in Mombasa yesterday, she said delay in disbursement of gadgets was occasioned by poor school infrastructure and lack of electricity in some rural schools.
“We are engaging the Ministry to ensure we narrow down the student gadget ration to 2:1 in phase two. Before the launch of first phase, 14 per cent of schools didn’t have electricity but now about 20,000 schools have power,” said Getau.
She asked headteachers to get devices as they has reduced absenteeism and teachers’ workload.
