Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua this weekend joined forces with his former classmates to sponsor a five-day retreat for teachers from Kianyaga High School at the coast.

According to Gachagua, the old boys sent 75 teachers and members of the school's board of management to the coast to strategise on making the institution 'great again'.

"The Old Boys are elated to have sponsored a five-day retreat at the Coast for our 75 teachers and Board of Management," Gachagua disclosed.

"The Alumni Association, where I am the Patron, is determined to sacrifice to make our school great again in giving back."

Gachagua, who spent six years at the institution, says the school played a key role in his character formation.

"My journey to national leadership has been long and very challenging. Many people, including, but not limited to my late parents, held my hand. Several institutions were instrumental in defining my destiny. Kianyaga High School, where I spent 6 years, is the most important; it was responsible for my schooling, mentorship, and character formation," Gachagua said.

In a statement hours after presiding over day one of the retreat at the North Coast Beach Hotel in Mombasa, the DP noted that the alumni association hopes to make Kianyaga High School the best performing in the country.

"The retreat is for planning and strategising on how to transform Kianyaga High School into a center of excellence - making it the best-performing school in the country," he said.

"I was happy to spend the first day of the retreat- running deep into the night- working with the teachers on the turn-around plan."

He said the old boys and the management had signed an agreement on how to put the school on the Kenyan map.

"We have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the teachers that the Alumni will handle the hardware (infrastructural development) while the teachers will take charge of the software (performance)," he stated.

The Principal of Alliance High School David Chomba, an Old Boy of Kianyaga, is scheduled to preside over day two of the retreat.

"Other academic resource persons have been lined up for the next three days. I am very encouraged that my Old School will very soon be on the Kenyan map," he added.

Gachagua visited the school for an alumni meeting in March.

He donated a total of Ksh800,000 to members of staff and students for a party.

"Before I leave, isn't there a midterm coming up? I must organise a bash…For the boys I leave Ksh500,000, for the teachers here I will give Ksh200,000 and for the subordinate staff Ksh100,000," he said.

He also promised to buy a 62-seater school bus following a request from the school captain.

"You have requested that you want me to provide for you a 62-seater Scania bus. Hiyo bus nitanunua na nitaleta (I will buy and bring that bus)," he said.
