Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka yesterday described former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo as a “political hurricane” that is rallying to unite the country.

Jirongo who has been in the political cold, seems to warm his way into the One Kenya Alliance (OKA) where he has turned out as an acerbic attack dog against Deputy President William Ruto.

Jirongo graced and spoke during the Kanu Delegates Conference when Senator Gideon Moi, was coronated as the party’s presidential candidate.

And yesterday, he was a key speaker in the Mt Kenya Foundation meeting with OKA leaders Musalia Mudavadi, Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetang’ula where he pitched for a Luyhia presidency.

In both occasions he seemed to wear both the hat of a king maker and attack dog.

Deep-seated fears

“Where I come from, we don’t understand tribalism. We have voted for Mwai Kibaki, Kenneth Matiba and Raila many times. People think Luyhias are voting machines. We decided this time round, we will offer one of us to lead the country,” he told the gathering in a tense speech.

He added: “There are deep-seated fears and anxieties about the next election because a person has created a new tribe called the rich and declared it the enemy, so that he can continue perpetuating things that he has been committing before.”

In what was seen as a warning against Raila, Jirongo warned the Mt Kenya business leaders against what he described as “a preferred candidate.”

“We don’t want to hear that Mt Kenya has a preferred candidate. We can work with everybody including Raila but under a structured arrangement,” said the former Lugari MP.

He was also seen in a meeting with the OKA principals and former Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua yesterday.

However, the former MP has kept everybody guessing on his real gameplan. Some political players claimed yesterday that the former MP had been roped in to contain Ruto, a former friend-turned foe.
