Kenya Red Cross Secretary-General Dr Asha Mohammed has resigned from the position effective April 14, 2023.

In her place, the board has appointed Deputy Secretary General Dr Ahmed Idris to hold the position in an acting capacity.

"It is with sadness that the Board of the Kenya Red Cross Society announces Asha Mohammed will be stepping down from her role as the Secretary-General for personal reasons, effective 14th April 2023.
Asha will in the next few months support leadership transition as she hands over in acting capacity to the Deputy Secretary General Ahmed Idris," Kenya Red Cross Governor and Chairman Geoffrey Kipngetich Korir said in a statement.

"The Board is confident that Asha will be able to oversee an effective transition process with the support of the board, staff, volunteers and partners of the Kenya Red Cross."

Dr Asha's role in Kenya Red Cross

Mohammed has been the Secretary-General since January 2020 and prior to that held the positions of Deputy Secretary General and Director for Health and Social Services at the Kenya Red Cross.

"Her role as Secretary General coincided with a very difficult global and local humanitarian context, from responding to the COVID-19 pandemic to the worst drought the country has experienced in the last several decades. Under her leadership, Kenya Red Cross has lived up to its commitment of being "always there", responding to emergencies and supporting communities. The Board is grateful for her service, passion and commitment," added Korir.

Mohammed also served as the Provincial AIDS Control Coordinator for Nairobi National AIDS Control Council (NACC) before leaving in 2002 to join Kenya Red Cross.
