Leave civil servants alone, legislators warn DP Ruto
A section of legislators from the Kieleweke side yesterday challenged Deputy President William Ruto to face President Uhuru Kenyatta head-on if he is unhappy with his government appointees instead of ridiculing them in public.
The legislators said if Ruto is not courageous enough to do that, then he should resign from office since he has indicated that he is not comfortable working with public servants appointed by the President.
In particular, the legislators told Ruto to keep off Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i and his Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho, as they have so far demonstrated to be the most hardworking civil servants.
Consequently, the MPs also called on the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to investigate Ruto after legislators allied to him on Monday, led by Belgut MP Nelson Koech, told the duo to learn from the fates of the late George Saitoti and Joseph Nkaissery, who were the previous holders of the docket.
Attack civil servants
“Ruto has only two options, face the President or get out of government and chart a new career path. We want to remind the DP that the civil servants that he is attacking are not the problem,” said Homa Bay County Women Rep Gladys Wanga.
The over 18 legislators, who were led by Wanga, Ngunjiri Wambugu (Nyeri Town), Memusi Kanchori (Kajiado Central) and Richard Onyonka (Kitutu Chache South), claimed that the attacks by Ruto on the duo is because he is angry and bitter at the people who he believes owe him the presidency.
Onyonka said that even though Ruto has a right to campaign for the presidency he ought to do so with decorum and avoid attacking civil servants.
He said: “We want to tell the DP to respect us and we will respect them him. Let him know that if he continues referring our people as witches then he will be shocked that no one will vote for him.”
Kanchori said as leaders from the Maasai region they need Ruto to come out clean and explain what his followers meant when they told the duo to learn from the fates of Nkaissery and Saitoti. “We want Ruto to come out and tell the country what he knows about the death of the two. We also want the DCI to interrogate him and explain what he meant by that,” he said.
