Education Cabinet secretary Magoha dismisses call to postpone exams
Education Cabinet secretary George Magoha has dismissed calls for postponement of national exams over the Covid-19 pandemic, maintaining it’s too early to make that decision.
Speaking yesterday during the daily Covid-19 briefing, he assured Kenyans that the government has been monitoring the issue keenly, promising to advise Kenyans if the need to postpone the exams will arise.
“We are working behind the backroom but I will not divulge the details to you because dead people do not sit for exams,” said Magoha.
“We have not reached a point where we are saying we’re going to postpone this or that because as far as I am concerned there is no reason to postpone the exams,” he said.
Magoha (pictured) said as a ministry, they have been holding several closed-door meetings with the concerned stakeholders, and said they would be advising parents accordingly in a few days about the national exams.
“There is no reason why any parent should be worried because when time comes we will tell them what to do and we have several scenarios, he said.
“In any case, we have just lost six weeks and as far as I am concerned, our children are enjoying the holiday,” said Magoha.
The pronouncement by the government came a few weeks after Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) dismissed calls byKenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) to have this year’s national examinations postponed saying such action will be of disadvantage to Kenyan children who have registered for the exam.
At the same time, the Education CS urged learners to continue learning using the online platforms that the government has already established.
