Patience Nyange lands gov’t job days after IGAD appointment

The former Association of Media Women in Kenya (AMWIK) Executive Director Patience Nyange has landed a government job days after being appointed to the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).

Mid this month, IGAD announced that Nyange had been appointed the new spokesperson in the Office of the Executive Secretary Dr Workneh Gebeyehu.

In the new appointment by the government, Nyange will now serve as a board member of Kenya's Communications and Multimedia Appeals Tribunal.

In a gazette notice dated March 20, 2024, Cabinet Secretary for Communications and Digital Economy Eliud Owalo also appointed Rosemary Wacera Kuria as the chairperson of the board.

Others appointed to the board include Vivienne Namadoa, Manyura Tiberius Nyangau, Ruth Okowa, Timothy Toroney and Samson Wambua Kitonyi.

"In exercise of the powers conferred by section 102 (I) of the Kenya Information and Communications Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications and the Digital Economy, appoints—
Under paragraph (a), Rosemary Wacera Kuria, Chairperson Under paragraph (b), Vivienne A. Namadoa, Manyura Tiberius Nyangau, Patience Nyange, Ruth Okowa, Timothy K. Toroney, Samson Wambua Kitonyi (Dr), to be members of the Communications and Multimedia Appeals Tribunal, for a period of three (3) years, with effect from the 22nd March 2024," Owalo said.

The tribunal is tasked with the responsibility of settling disputes in the communication and multimedia sector.

In a statement after her appointment, Nyange thanked the government and the Cabinet Secretary for the appointment, promising justice in the sector.

My sincere gratitude to Cabinet Secretary HE, Eliud Owalo and the Government of Kenya for their trust. I am committed to justice for the media and the public. Thankful for this opportunity. AMWIK announced Nyange's exit from the position of chief executive officer in January, a position she had held since November 15, 2022.

Nyange's career

Nyange previously worked as an associate broadcast mentor with BBC Media Action, a journalist with the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) and a presenter and producer at Baraka FM. 

She unsuccessfully vied for the Taita Taveta gubernatorial seat in 2022.

The media personality had resigned as a board member of the Media Council of Kenya to contest for the seat alongside other three women.

She also served as the Assistant Director at the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) and Communications Advisor to former Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru.

Nyange holds a Master's Degree in International Public Relations and Global Communication Management from Cardiff University in the United Kingdom.
