The former Association of Media Women in Kenya (AMWIK) Executive Director Patience Nyange has landed a new job with the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).

In a statement on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, IGAD announced that Nyange had been appointed the new spokesperson in the Office of the Executive Secretary Dr Workneh Gebeyehu.

"We are thrilled to announce and welcome Patience Nyange to the IGAD family effective March 2024. With her many years of experience, expertise, and passion for effective communication, we are poised to elevate our voice and mission not only in the region but globally. Welcome aboard, we wish you all the best in your journey with us," IGAD stated.

The IGAD comprises the countries of Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan and Uganda.

Nyange's appointment to IGAD comes two months after the AMWIK board announced her exit in January.

Nyange, who was appointed to the position on  November 15, 2022, was replaced by Sharon Kechula.

"This is to notify you that Patience Nyange ceased to be the Executive Director of the Association of Media Women in Kenya as of 8th January 2024. The Board of Directors has appointed Sharon Kechula, who held the position of Programs Manager as the Acting Executive Director with immediate effect. She, with support from the board, will oversee the association's affairs," the board said in a statement.

Nyange's career

Before she was appointed the AMWIK boss, she worked in different media fields including broadcast journalism, international public relations and communications, social media management and mentorship for young journalists.

She previously worked as an associate broadcast mentor with BBC Media Action, a journalist with the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) and a presenter and producer at Baraka FM.

She was appointed to replace Judie Kaberia who resigned from the position to join the Friedrich Naumann Foundation East Africa.

She unsuccessfully vied for the Taita Taveta gubernatorial seat in 2022.

The media personality had resigned as a board member of the Media Council of Kenya to contest for the seat alongside other three women.

She also served as the Assistant Director at the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) and Communications Advisor to former Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru.

Nyange holds a Master's Degree in International Public Relations and Global Communication Management from Cardiff University in the United Kingdom.
