Agricultural production in Homa Bay is set to increase after small scale farmers in the county received government funds worth Sh58 million to grow their businesses.

The money was disbursed to 71 farmer groups from six sub-counties in the county by the National Agricultural Inclusive Growth Project (NARIGP) through the department of agriculture in Homa Bay.

Beneficiary farmers are engaged in poultry, dairy, cotton and banana production.

NARIGP is a State project that is implemented through the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock Fisheries and Irrigation.

In the disbursement, four groups in Ndhiwa, Kasipul, Rangwe and Homa Bay got funds to expand their agricultural ventures.

The beneficiaries who are members of various cooperative societies are expected to use the money in expanding their agribusiness.

Among the beneficiary groups are Hosrand Dairy, Rangwe Dairy, Kasbondo Aim Dairy,  Ndhiwa dairy and Great Wang Chieng Poultry Farmers Cooperative Society.

Governor Gladys Wanga and her deputy Oyugi Magwanga presided over the cheques distribution to members of the groups yesterday.

Wanga said funds issued to the farmers should also help in promotion of value addition in agricultural produce.

“We expect to see the economy in villages around  the cooperative society change as money has been made available,” she said.

The governor told the farmers to ensure prudent use of the funds to promote food security in the county.  She noted that the products each group produces should be seen in retail shelves competing with others from other counties.

“We will able to market the products made locally when we hold the devolution conference,” she added.
