After five months, Kenya Handball Federation (KHF) women’s league side Ulinzi Sharks honoured their first fixture, registering a 27-23 win against a highly improved Mt Kenya University (MKU).

The team has been out of action since league action began in September. The soldiers had a slow start exchanging leads with the students for the better part of the first half.

However, they pulled away, punishing MKU’s lapse in concentration, in the last five minutes of the half to head to the break at 15-8 lead.

A similar script played out in the second half as the students made a comeback to make it a one point game at 21-20.

The last five minutes of the match played out the same way as Sharks’ experience came to play for the four-goal win.

Sharks’ Josephine Kerubo scored 11 as her teammates Sarah Wasike and Diana Karani added six each for the win. MKU’s Sarah Gitu watched as her 11 goals went down the drain.

“For a first match after such a long break,  the players have one well. I expected a win and the players have dug deep for it.

Training and reconditioning is going on well and we have our eyes set on the elusive title.

“The league is tough but the experience of our players will come in handy. We have four new players set to join us for our next match and that will give us the much needed depth,” said Sharks coach Evans Omollo.

Meanwhile, men’s side Makueni Bees beat MKU men 23-22 and University of Nairobi (UoN)  34-24 to take their win tally to five.

They, however, lost 33-28 to military side Thika Engineers. They were set to play their fourth match of the weekend against Ulinzi on Sunday afternoon.

“The boys are improving.  We are getting good exposure and the targets we set for ourselves every weekend we have achieved so far.  Offensively we are doing well.

We are working on our defense as we look to get better ahead of the busy schedule ahead which will include school games,” said Makueni Bees coach Gerald Juma.
