Murang'a Governor Mwangi wa Iria, who is eyeing the presidential seat, is seeking President Uhuru Kenyatta's endorsement.

Wa Iria said being the only presidential aspirant from the Mount Kenya region, Uhuru should endorse him as his successor to take over leadership from him after his term in office expires.

Speaking in Ihura stadium, the governor reiterated that nothing bars the region from producing the president slamming those who have been spreading the narrative.

"There is a section of leaders who have been going around the country saying the Gema community should not produce the president but this is misleading because everyone has the right to vie for the seat.

"The president should back me because I hail from his backyard and this way we shall be able to create a succession plan for the region," he said.

The governor, however, expressed his concerns over massive divisions in the region which he said will cost its political future if nothing is done to unite the people.

"We enjoy the strength in our numbers but the current divisions are weakening our unity," Wa Iria stated.

He said the leaders and residents need to have a serious conversation about the future of the region, politically and economically.

"Forget about the campaigns because they are seasonal. We need a serious dialogue on how to safeguard our leadership and the future of our people and it must happen now," he said.

The presidential contest, he said, will be a three-horse race and exuded confidence of winning the seat in the August poll.
