Rugby: KCB, Kabras Sugar maintain top spot as playoffs take shape
Kenya Cup rivals KCB RFC and Kabras Sugar maintained their top form in the 2020-21 KRU Kenya Cup campaign after beating Mwamba RFC and Impala RFC respectively today.
Kenya Cup defending Champions KCB Rugby secured 44 points after nine wins in 10 matches played this season after their 40-6 whipping of Impala Saracens in a Kenya Cup match at Impala Club.
The Bankers scored 313 points and conceded 149 for a point differential of 164 in this, campaign automatically booking a slot in the semi-finals of the competition.
On the other side the sugar millers are still unbeaten having won all their seven matches as the league heads into the final stages of the season.
Kabras RFC are second on the log with two matches to play, with the sugar men unbeaten in this campaign, winning all their eight matches and missing a bonus point once this season.
Their 56-12 win over Mwamba RFC in a Kenya Cup match played at RFUEA Grounds on Saturday was enough for the Dominique Habimana charges, accumulating 39 points, five behind KCB who have played two more matches.
In other games, Menengai Oilers charged their way back to third position following a narrow 28-26 win over Varsity side Strathmore Leos.
With 21 points accumulated after four wins, Oilers are a point above Strathmore who are on 20 points after picking two losing bonus points this weekend.
Kenya Harlequins third win of the season against varsity side Kenyatta University Blak Blad propelled them back to position four in the Kenya cup log.
Impala Saracens on the other hand who suffered a massive 40-6 defeat against Kabras Sugar have 16 points from seven matches while newly promoted MMUST Rugby have 15 points from eight matches.
Nondescript RFC have moved to 15 points from five matches, with Nakuru RFC, Mwamba Rugby Club and Blak Blad occupying the bottom of the Kenya Cup log.
KCB brought in a very experienced side including players who featured in the Tokyo Olympics led by Shujaa captain Andrew Amonde, Jacob Ojee and Vincent Onyala.
Kabras were promoted to the top tier in 2014 and won the Kenya cup title in 2016, under Charles Cardovillis.
