Businessman Jimi Wanjigi yesterday decamped to the Safina Party. Wanjigi, who is battling accusations of land fraud and illegally holding firearms, immediately announced he would seek the presidency on the party’s ticket.

He was received by the party’s leadership, led by veteran lawyer and politician Paul Muite and Secretary General John Wamagata.

“I resigned from ODM after the brutal violence I experienced at Kasarani during the National Delegates Conference (NDC). Raila made it practically impossible for the party to hold a free, democratic and credible presidential nomination. I have had many meetings with Kenyans who want to stand on the ODM ticket.

“ They are scared and terrified. They do not believe the party upholds its democratic credentials,” the businessman told reporters.

He was referring to an incident where he was blocked from accessing Kasarani Stadium where ODM was holding its NDC to endorse Raila as its presidential candidate. The event was graced by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Yesterday, controversial businessman and politician Steve Mbogo — who has been a member of ODM and a key supporter of Raila — also joined Safina.

Recently, Wanjigi enjoyed some brief dalliance with Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, signalling a possible entry into the latter’s camp or the formation of a coalition.

Muite said Safina was a vibrant political vehicle going into the 2022 elections.
