Nyandarua Governor Francis Kimemia has raised concern over the sharp drop in farm produce prices.

He has called for reforms to address the current challenges facing farmers across the country, saying prices of farm produce are going down as farm inputs prices rise.

The Governor cited dropping milk and potato prices in the region, which he said had adversely affected thousands of farmers who rely on the products for income.

He said some months ago, a litre of milk was going for Sh42 but the prices had dropped to Sh17, leaving farmers counting huge losses.

“I think the reforms that we should be currently addressing are those around empowering our farmers and seeking markets for them while the political ones can wait,” he said.

Speaking at Engineer trading centre in Kinangop, Kimemia said his government was keen to address marketing challenges that farmers were facing.

“Plans are underway to construct a milk-processing plant in Kipipiri area and this will address the issue of marketing for our farmers,” he said.

The governor noted that despite the introduction of the 50kg packaging rule for potatoes, some brokers were still flouting it and fleecing farmers. He, however, lauded police and the Judiciary for helping in implementation of the rule.
