Going gets tough in Betika League
The past weekend was in every sense a captivating affair, with interesting results being witnessed after 10 matches were played in total.
Despite a 1-1 draw away against Kenya Police on Sunday, surprise package Fortune Sacco took ownership of the top slot on the log with 14 points after round seven of action in the Betika National Super League following slips by rivals FC Talanta and Coast Stima.
Kibera Black Stars were the biggest talking point after downing immediate previous leaders FC Talanta 2-1 at Ligi Ndogo Grounds to jump five places onto seventh on 12 points.
At the same time Coast Stima was humbled 3-0 away to lowly APS Bomet. There were also cases of magical comebacks from the likes of Nairobi Stima who came from two goals down in the second half to draw 2-2 against debutants Mully Children’s Family who were the visitors.
The powermen under the tutelage of coach Charles Omondi have now leaped one place to 11th spot on nine points.
Fortune Sacco from Kerugoya County has been impressive thus far and looks ready to rub shoulders with the big boys and challenge for the title.
However, their goal difference of +3 is nothing to speak about and could be their biggest undoing in the long run.
Talanta under Ken Kenyatta have two losses in seven matches but are still very much in the race given their strong goal difference of +10.
So far, only fourth placed Kisumu Allstars and fifth placed Kenya Police are the only unbeaten sides in the second tier with the latter’s one match in hand against Vihiga Bullets they intend to utilise to gain from their current 12 points.
The middle of the table also looks interesting with tight margins being witnessed. Traditional rivals and former Premiership teams Chemelil Sugar and Sony Sugar are only separated by a single point.
Chemelil Sugar thrashed Sony Sugar 3-0 at Gusii Stadium on Sunday in what was coach Hezzy Obungu’s third win of the campaign.
The sugar men have a total 21 goals to their advantage with the latter on a -2 goal difference with the former on 10 points and Sony on nine.
At the bottom of the table, Mt. Kenya United, Mwatate United and Muranga Seal remain in the red zone.
