Politics took centre stage as June Jebet Moi, the lastborn daughter to Kenya’s second President the late Daniel Moi was yesterday laid to rest at her Bahati home in Nakuru county.

The funeral service was held at the late patriarch’s home in Kabarak, Rongai and attended by senior political leaders from the Azimio coalition led by former Vice President and Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

Other leaders present included Kanu chairman Gideon Moi, former Chief Justice Emeritus David Maraga, former Defence CS Eugene Wamalwa, senators and Members of Parliament.

Speaking during the service, Kalonzo eulogised June as a humble daughter who respected other members of the society despite hailing from a prominent family.

“She was a very charming President’s daughter. She was so cheerful. She never gave the impression that she is overbearing because she was the president’s daughter,” said Kalonzo.

Kalonzo tore into the national government led by President Ruto accusing it of misplaced priorities and what he termed as being power hungry.  “June has left us at the edge of a cliff politically and economically.  When I hear some people in the current leadership talk of extending the Presidential term limit, I get shocked,” he said.

He took a swipe at the Kenya Kwanza administration over the recent onslaught on leaders allied to the Azimio Coalition among them Kisii Governor Simba Arati and former Murang’a governor Mwangi Wa Iria.

Volatile North Rift

Former Nandi Hills MP Alfred Keter echoed the sentiments saying that the current administration had not demonstrated the desired care for Kenyans especially in the volatile North Rift region.  “There are a lot of injustices happening in Baringo. Taking police to Haiti is irrelevant and insensitive when our own people are suffering in Baringo. This nation is faced with many challenges because of a leadership that is not sensitive to the citizens,” said Keter.

He went on saying that “The late Daniel Moi told us that when you see a leader assuming leadership on the basis of division we can’t expect anything good. In 2022, we were divided into the rich, middle and lower class. They (Kenya Kwanza) told us that they would take care of the low class. Today they are hurting them.”

The late June who died on April 11 aged 60 after a short illness is survived by one daughter Paula Jepkemboi who eulogised her as an “Inspiring soul.”  “She was the most loving, humble, compassionate, understanding, family-oriented woman and one of the most beautiful souls one could ever meet. She taught me how to pray and led by example,” said Ms Paula.

June’s siblings in a tribute read by her elder brother Phillip Moi eulogised her as a sibling who brought happiness to the whole family. “Her presence brought warmth to our lives, like the gentle glow of a candle illuminating a darkened room. Though in every trial and triumph, she stood as a testament to the power of love and the strength found in Christ,” said Phillip.
